Meaning "village of water" in the Mayan language, Mayakoba’s development began in the early 2000s with a vision to integrate world-class hospitality with environmental sustainability.
This master-planned community boasts a network of freshwater canals and lagoons, surrounded by lush mangroves and tropical forests, providing a haven for diverse wildlife. Four hotels - Andaz, Banyan Tree, Fairmont, and Rosewood - reside within Mayakoba, each offering a unique ambiance and experience.
The 18-hole, par 72 golf course stretches across 7,024 yards, offering a thrilling challenge for golfers of all skill levels. The layout integrates dense mangroves, pristine limestone canals, and the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, creating a visually stunning golfing experience.
El Camaleón Golf at Mayakoba also boasts a rich tournament history. Most notably, it became the first PGA TOUR course in Latin America when it began hosting the Mayakoba Golf Classic in 2007, an event that has attracted many top golf professionals. This prestigious tournament has witnessed victories by renowned golfers like Fred Funk, Graeme McDowell, Matt Kuchar and Viktor Hovland.
More recently, in 2023, El Camaleón further solidified its reputation by hosting the inaugural LIV Golf Mayakoba tournament, expanding its reach into the realm of professional golf's newest circuit.
